“Come to Hamburg, it is the Venice of Germany” they said as we parted ways in June ’15. We met Katerina and
Holger doing a Workaway in California with the Bennett family. We really enjoyed spending time with them exploring the area around Camino, Placerville and Lake Tahoe. We did not think we would see them again as
we had no plans to go to Germany.
Fastforward 2 years 3 months . . .
we found ourselves staying in their apartment in Schanzenviertel
(arty, interesting inner-city quarter of Hamburg) and being shown some of the highlights of this fantastic city. It was a short 4-day stay but
we packed heaps in and can highly recommend a visit to this city for anyone heading to Germany.

We spent some time at the local craft brewery, Ratherrn. We explored Schanzenviertel and visited the
St Pauli football stadium, we ate Hamburgers (decided this was a ‘must do’), we
saw the beautiful new opera house Elbphilharmonie, we took a ferry down the Elbe
to the beach restaurant scene where we drank beer shandies (alterwassers) and ate ‘matjes’ (herring
sandwiches).
