2017-October-09 Germany, Hamburg: Turning 50 Ain’t So Bad!

Last time we wrote we were winging our way to Dublin to commiserate celebrate Steve’s 50th birthday.  We arrived on the Friday night and met up with everyone in the famous Temple Bar pub.  Steve had combined his birthday celebrations with a friend turning 40 so between the two of them they managed to get a group together of around 50 people from Australia, South Africa, USA and the UK.

The warm up party at Temple Bar was followed by the main event the next evening – a fantastic dinner held in a restaurant of converted cellars where we had our own private area.  Probably just as well as we were a bit noisy!

On Sunday night we did a Literary Pub Tour which was led by two actors who entertained us with stories of Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, William Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett and others as well as performing excerpts from their works. It was a lot of fun and managed to keep us away from the Guinness for a couple of hours which was a good thing after Friday and Saturday nights!  We had a smaller gathering on Monday night to wish Steve on his actual birthday and ended up back at the scene of the crime (Temple Bar) till the wee hours of the morning.

Refills Arriving For The Group :-)

An added bonus for Jean was catching up with the extended family and reconnecting with a couple of people from high school and varsity that she had not seen in many, many years.   As the reacquainted high school friend, Gavin, said: “I have not partied like that since my twenties.  Actually, I don’t think I ever did 5 nights straight in my twenties!”

We then left Dublin with Steve and Christelle to go to Kilkenny for a couple of days.  It was great driving around the lush green countryside and spending some quiet time with them after the delightful mayhem of Dublin.

We must have wished Steve ‘Happy Birthday” about 15 times and he has moved on to visit family in Birmingham so is probably still being toasted with good wishes.

Jean has decided that turning 50 ain’t so bad and is starting to think about her turn next year 😊
