Our visit to Portugal was largely about Jean
meeting up with the side of her family that comes from Mozambique and now live
in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve.
We visited
the first two and also fitted in some sightseeing of course.

We got to try some local cuisine as well:
Nono, Jean’s cousin, cooked us a traditional cod, potato and boiled egg casserole. It is made using the salted cod (Bacalau).

Of course we also sampled several versions of the Nata (Portugese
custard tarts) and other local pastries. The cool thing we learned is the
reason that most of the tarts and cakes use a lot of egg yolks is because
the convents and monasteries used large quantities of egg-whites for starching
clothes, such as nuns' habits. It was quite common to use the leftover egg
yolks for baking.
Our favourite find was the Azeitao cheese which is made from sheep’s milk and
is creamy and delicious.

We found it amazing that all the Portuguese people we came across spoke English quite well and we didn't have any issues getting around or ordering food etc
We are now in Italy at our first workaway of this trip in a village called Pontedecimo which is 30 minutes North of Genoa. More on this next time.
