2015-August-29 USA, Texas, Austin: ABQ Poetry

Background Story
When we were staying in Albuquerque (ABQ), New Mexico, one morning Anthony and I took a short 30 minute walk down to the Rio Grande and then walked through the forest on the banks of the river.  On the way back we spotted a wooden box next to the letterbox of a house.  It had poetry written on it.  When we opened it we saw that inside was a lot more poetry as well as an invitation to write something and leave it (or email it later).  Despite not having written anything since school, I was inspired to pen the following.

Albuquerque - Kathy's Poetry Box

At another house along the same road we spotted a library for the use of anyone passing by.

ABQ Haiku
Rio Grande flows
wide here, thin there:- creating
it’s own poetry

Generosity Towards Travellers
Corporate couple ditched their jobs, time is ticking, greying hair
Let’s explore our world – go and roam,
Wonder what we’ll find out there
Push beyond our comfort zone!

The trip includes visiting friends from yesteryear
Hoping to re-connect, reminisce and peak into lives
How do they live now?  Are the happy? Do they care?
Meet their friends, kids, husbands and wives

Please house sit for me, look after my pets
I’ve posted online the location, some pictures
Feed the dogs, walk them and (hopefully not) take them to the vets
Make yourselves at home, meet the neighbours

What - you’re stuck for a night or three’s accommodation?
Don’t pay for a motel and be on your own!
Stranger, come and stay with us, share information,
Fresh towels, WiFi, a bed and plenty of conversation

Do you need a lift from the bus depot when you arrive?
Join my friends for a short-film fest and picnic in the park
Take my car, here are the keys. Do you know how to drive?
Come along to our Meetup - “Hawaii After Dark”

I’ll show you old town if you haven’t yet been
4th of July, cheeseburgers on the house and of course some Bud Lite
Here’s a list of local stuff, maybe you haven’t yet seen?
Thanks for having us to stay, it’s been such a delight!

Watch my group do Improv, the tickets are my shout
Would you like some of our pasta, a glass of red wine?
How are you coping on your Walkabout?
With all this generosity, we’re doing just fine!
